RSMT was successfully applied to the restoration and reclamation of abandoned acid coal mineland. AMD & ART, Inc., a non-profit organization (amdandart@amdandart.org), allowed RSMT to be applied to planting 5,000 trees and shrubs, the construction of 7 acres of wetlands and in establishing athletic fields (soccer and baseball) on a moon scape site at Vintondale, PA. A RSMT blend of dredged material, acid coal bony residual, wastepaper fiber, Bionsoil (processed cow manure), fertilizer and lime was used to plant trees and shrubs in the “Litmus Garden” of the Park. CarnegieMellonUniversity received an US EPA Brownfield Education Grant to train unemployed persons for Brownfield related jobs. Trainees learned how to blend RSMT topsoil for application at the Vintondale site (Pictures at the top of this page). A RSMT blend of coarse yardwaste culls and fresh cow manure was used for additional plantings through the site. Seven acres of constructed wetlands were established using RSMT blends of various combinations of dredged material, wastepaper fiber, Bionsoil (processed cow manure), fertilizer and lime; wastepaper fiber, Bionsoil (processed cow manure), fertilizer and lime; sawdust, fresh and aged cow manure, fertilizer and lime; and wastepaper fiber, mushroom compost, Bionsoil (processed cow manure), fertilizer and lime (Pictures to the left).
An environmental eyesore was converted into a community asset.
